Ukraine has put forward its candidacy for the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for 2023-2025, according to the country’s Ministry of Energy, Report informs referring to TASS.
Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko made the announcement during an informal meeting of EU energy and transport ministers in Stockholm on February 27.
“The minister of energy announced that Ukraine is nominating its candidacy for the IAEA Board of Governors for 2023-2025, and called on the meeting participants to join the discussion of this issue and support the Ukrainian application,” the Energy Ministry’s Telegram channel reported.
Halushchenko at the meeting called for sanctions to be extended to all areas of the Russian energy sector, including the nuclear industry, stressed that Ukraine would continue its integration into European energy markets, and also noted that the work of the Ukrainian energy system was stabilized as a result of coordination of international efforts.
The IAEA Board of Governors is one of the two governing bodies of the International Atomic Energy Agency (together with the General Conference of Member States). The Board of Governors meets five times a year, makes recommendations to the General Conference on the agency’s activities and budget, and appoints the director-general of the IAEA, who is then approved by the General Conference. The council currently consists of 35 states.
