Türkiye detains new suspect in murder of Russian ambassador

Turkish special services have detained another suspect in the murder of Russian Ambassador to Ankara Andrey Karlov. The arrest operation was carried out in Istanbul, Report informs referring to the Hurriyet newspaper.

The wife of a friend of Mevlut Mert Altintas, an ex-policeman who attacked Karlov in 2016 and was liquidated at the scene of the crime, was taken into custody.

The woman is a member of FETO. The full names of the woman and her husband, who allegedly knew the ambassador’s killer, were not specified.

Karlov was assassinated in Ankara on December 19, 2016, while he was delivering a speech at the opening of the photo exhibition “Russia through the eyes of the Turks.”

The court verdict in the case of the murder of the Russian ambassador was announced in March 2021. Five people were sentenced to life imprisonment, eight more received from 5 to 15 years in prison, six defendants were acquitted.
