Turkish FM speaks about need to reform UN

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan spoke at the Group of Twenty (G20) ministerial meeting in Rio de Janeiro about the need for reform in the entire United Nations (UN) system due to the failure of its Security Council to resolve international crises, Report informs via TRT News.

The Turkish minister, speaking at the Global Governance Reform session, noted that the UN Security Council “is unable to take steps on many issues, especially on resolving the crisis in Gaza, which casts a shadow on the prestige of the entire UN system.” Fidan emphasized that a more democratic, accountable UN system based on the parameters of international law is needed.

Fidan also said that the international financial system must be more transparent and sustainable, and financial institutions must pursue policies that take into account the interests of developing and poor countries. Otherwise, in his opinion, the G20 will not be able to achieve the goal of sustainable development.

The Turkish authorities have previously repeatedly stated the need to reform the UN system, noting that “the world is more than five,” meaning the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (Russia, USA, China, UK and France), which have the right of veto and, if desired, can block any solution.
