Russian diplomats may visit Consulate General in Armenia’s Syunik this autumn

The first group of Russian diplomats may come to Russia’s Consulate General in Armenia’s Syunik this autumn, Deputy Director of the 4th Department of the CIS countries of the Russian Foreign Ministry Sergey Paltov said at a meeting with the Governor of the region Robert Ghukasyan, Report informs citing Sputnik-Armenia.

He noted that the accommodation of diplomats will first take place without opening a full-fledged consulate general, since this requires time and certain procedures between the Russian and Armenian Foreign Ministries. Nevertheless, the Russian delegation has already toured the building for the consulate general and premises where diplomats can be accommodated, he added.

The diplomat believes that the opening of the Consulate General is more than a diplomatic presence. According to his estimates, there are about 1,000 Russian citizens working in the region who need consular services. The border guards noted the importance of the presence of consular officers, whose functions will be wider, Paltov noted.

“This is a very important step. The presence of our diplomats, along with border guards, the military in Sisian and Goris, as well as Russian institutions, is for additional safety,” he said.
