Poll: Pashinyan’s party leads in election race in Armenia

The political alliance ‘My Step,’ formed on the basis of the party of acting Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan ‘Civil Contract,’ in anticipation of the parliamentary elections, is leading in public opinion polls, with a small margin ahead of the main competitor – the ‘Armenia’ bloc of ex-President Robert Kocharyan, according to the MPG company, a partner of the sociological service Gallup, Report informs referring to TASS.

“If the elections were held tomorrow, according to the poll, 22.9 percent would vote for the My Step party, 17.5 percent are ready to choose the Armenia bloc and 3.8 percent would prefer the Prosperous Armenia party. Yerevan and the regional cities support the ‘Armenia’ bloc, while people in the villages support the ‘My Step’ party,” said the head of the MPG Aram Navasardyan.

Against the background of the political crisis that began in Armenia in November last year, the prime minister and the heads of the parties represented in the parliament agreed to hold early elections.

On May 10, at a special meeting, the deputies complied with the necessary formalities to make the dissolution of parliament legally possible. After that, Armenian President Armen Sarkissian set the date of early elections for June 20. Pashinyan and members of his government remain in the acting status until the elections.
