Armenia is not an irreplaceable strategic partner for Russia, Russian political scientist Maksim Shevchenko told Report.
Shevchenko believes that Russia's military base in Armenia serves no purpose. "The military base there is absolutely unnecessary for Russia. It only creates problems and does not allow for any real influence," he noted.
The political scientist explained this by pointing out that the Russian Federation has established normal relations with the countries of the region, emphasizing the special role of relations between Moscow and Baku. "We have excellent relations with Azerbaijan, based on personal and comprehensive dialogue between the two countries’ presidents," Shevchenko stated.
In the context of building relations with neighboring countries, Shevchenko expressed his lack of understanding regarding Armenia's role for Russia. "No routes pass through the territory of Armenia, so I don't understand what strategic importance Armenia has for Russia," he said.
As for France, Shevchenko understands that they rely on a pro-French stratum in Armenia and are destabilizing the situation in the Caucasus, while Moscow, on the contrary, is trying to stabilize the situation in the region.
Establishing peace and stability in the South Caucasus region is a strategic task, Shevchenko emphasized. In his words, Armenia should not portray itself as a victim to whom everyone owes something, and should learn to get along with everyone in the region.
