Nursultan Nazarbayev resigns

In a TV address to people, President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev said he had decided to leave his position, Report informs.

"I decided to terminate my powers as a president," Nazarbayev said. "This year marks 30 years that I have been on the highest post. The people gave me the opportunity to be the first president of independent Kazakhstan," he said.

He said 'creation of a modern democratic state' of the Republic of Kazakhstan is one of his major achievements.

Speaker of the Senate of Parliament Kasim-Zhomart Tokayev will be the acting President of Kazakhstan until the presidential election is held.

Notably, in response to Nursultan Nazarbayev's appeal, the Constitutional Court of Kazakhstan earlier said that the main law of the country gives the right to the head of state to suspend his duties ahead of time.
