New head of EU monitoring mission in Georgia appointed

Greek diplomat, ex-ambassador to Tbilisi Dimitrios Karabalis has been appointed the new head of the EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in Georgia. His mandate is defined until December 14, 2023, Report informs via Georgian media.
He succeeds Marek Szczygieł of Poland, who has been Head of Mission since March 2020.
The EUMM is an unarmed civilian monitoring mission of the European Union. The mission was deployed in September 2008 after a six-point ceasefire agreement was signed between Russia and Georgia, mediated by the EU.
