Lavrov: Russia to send letter to US with response to proposals for security guarantees

Russia will send a letter to the United States on February 17 with a response to Washington’s proposals on security guarantees, and it will be published, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a press conference, Report informs referring to TASS.

The Russian Federation will send its responses on paper and in electronic form in a few hours, Lavrov said.

“We are completing the analysis of the American letter. I hope that in the very near future you will learn how the situation will develop further. At least we will send this letter to the American side today,” he said.

Lavrov confirmed that the answer would be published. “We believe it is absolutely essential that interested members of civil societies in our countries have an idea of what is happening, what positions each side stands for, because otherwise, if it is kept secret, as our colleagues in Washington and Brussels prefer, then public opinion will clog with the lies, outright propaganda that is now filling the information spaces when describing what is happening in Europe, on the border between Russia and Ukraine,” he explained.

The requirements of the Russian Federation on security guarantees are formulated on the basis of international agreements, Lavrov said.

Moscow will continue to politely but persistently ask each country to respond to the request for the indivisibility of security, the minister said.

On January 26, the United States and NATO handed over to Russia written responses to Moscow’s proposals on security guarantees. The American side asked that the texts of these documents not be made public, but US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg listed their main provisions. According to these statements, the West didn’t make concessions for Russia, but outlined directions for further negotiations.
