Irish historian: Attack on Azerbaijani embassy in Iran - blow to security in region

The January 27 attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran, which killed one embassy employee and injured two, hampers security in the region, Irish historian and political scientist Patrick Walsh told Report.

He noted that what happened at the embassy is a great tragedy and, obviously, does not contribute to the improvement of relations between Azerbaijan and Iran, rather the opposite.

“States are responsible for ensuring the proper security of diplomatic institutions located on their territory,” he said.

According to Walsh, the fact that the attacker was able to attack the embassy with impunity should be of great concern to the Iranian authorities.

“Regardless of whether the reasons were private or politically motivated, unfortunately, there is an impression of a lack of adequate security measures and a desire to provide protection,” the expert said.

Walsh stressed that this tragic event is ‘fuel’ for conspiracy theories in social networks, and this further aggravates relations between the two states.

Ultimately, all this does not contribute to stability and peaceful regulation of relations in the region, he concluded.
