Giorgi Gabitashvili becomes new prosecutor general of Georgia

The Parliament of Georgia has elected Giorgi Gabitashvili to the post of Prosecutor General of the country, Report informs referring to Georgian media.

As many as 80 parliament members voted unanimously for his candidacy.

The position of Prosecutor General became vacant after Irakli Shotadze resigned in May 2024 for health reasons.

Gabitashvili served as Deputy Prosecutor General, and was nominated by the Prosecutor's Council. He was nominated as a candidate by the NGO "Research Center for the Development of the Legal System" and by members of the academic and legal community.

According to the law, Gabitashvili will hold the post of Prosecutor General for six years.
