Fidan does not rule out defense agreement with Caucasus countries

A Mecca agreement-style document on joint defense, similar to the one signed by Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan, may also be signed with countries of the South Caucasus, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said, Report informs.

Fidan made the remarks on Anadolu Agency's "Editor's Desk" program.

"Türkiye has a similar strategic position for the Middle East, the Caucasus, the Mediterranean basin and Europe," he said.

According to Fidan, by establishing this type of cooperation, Türkiye is becoming the only NATO member with diplomatic influence in all parts of the world.

"For example, Azerbaijan and Armenia are moving toward a final peace agreement, and Ankara supports the process. This creates security and economic prospects. Over time, there may also be a need to create a similar agreement, a defense alliance, in the Caucasus," Fidan said.

On August 7, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan signed the Mecca agreement on joint defense. Under the document, an armed attack on any of the three countries will be regarded as military intervention against all parties to the agreement.
