The recent statement by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is not aimed at speeding up the process of concluding a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia; on the contrary, it was made solely in his own interests, Jakub Korejba, an employee of the Polish Center for Eurasian Studies AVIM and an expert in the field of post-Soviet problems, told Report.
He noted that Yerevan’s proposal for a non-aggression treaty is not aimed at accepting mutual obligations, but rather at Pashinyan’s political survival: “For him, this is a chance to “buy” himself time and avoid formal recognition of his defeat.”
Commenting on the current situation in the South Caucasus region, the expert emphasized that signing a peace treaty is the only reasonable choice and there are no alternatives to it.
“The alternative is war, which will lead to worse consequences for all parties. Especially for the Armenians, who have neither moral arguments to continue their work, nor physical strength, nor material strength and means,” he said.
Jakub Korejba emphasized that eventually peace will come in the South Caucasus, despite the difficulties and slowdown of the process on the part of the Armenians.
“Peace is already in Karabakh. That is, it is good that a new reality exists in the region. Peace will bring benefits to all countries of the South Caucasus and, moreover, will finally be able to realize the enormous potential that is inherent in the region,” the expert concluded.
