The European Parliament has elected a chairman and two deputy heads for the delegation on relations with South Caucasus countries, Report informs.
Nils Ušakovs, a member of the Latvian parliament, was elected as the head of the delegation, while Nathalie Loiseau, a Member of the European Parliament from France, and Michał Szczerba, a deputy from Poland, were elected as his deputies.
Ušakovs noted that conflicts in Eastern Europe have affected the geopolitical situation in the South Caucasus region. He also emphasized that the situation in the region itself directly influences relations with the EU.
"Both internal events and regional conflicts are taking place in the region, which have changed the geopolitical situation, directly affecting relations between the European Union and the three South Caucasus countries," he said.
According to the new chairman, the South Caucasus has great strategic and economic importance.
"As we move forward, we will pay special attention to strengthening dialogue, promoting regional stability, and expanding cooperation in key areas such as security, rule of law, and human rights. I look forward to cooperating with each of you for a more prosperous and peaceful future for the Caucasus," he said.
