EU leaders say Georgia’s accession to union de facto halted

The European Union has de facto suspended Georgia’s accession process.

According to Report, this decision was announced following the EU leaders’ summit in Brussels.

The Council of Europe expressed serious concern about recent events in Georgia, particularly the adoption of the “Foreign Agents” law.

This law deviates from the European Commission’s recommendations for obtaining candidate status for EU membership.

Consequently, the Council of Europe calls on Georgian authorities to reconsider their actions, as the current course jeopardizes Georgia’s path to EU membership and effectively halts the accession process.

Additionally, there has been an increase in threats and attacks against civil society representatives, political leaders, social activists, and reporters in Georgia.
