Türkiye has begun contacts with representatives of Syria's new administration regarding the preparation of the country's constitution, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told journalists upon returning from Cairo, where he participated in the D-8 (Developing Eight) summit, Report informs via Anadolu Agency.
He noted that a new situation has emerged in Syria, and the fact that former president Bashar Assad is now in Russia indicates 'how significant the events have been.'
"Our brothers and sisters in Syria will make their own decisions about their future. We will try to help them determine what the state structure should be, share our experience [...]. One of the most important steps in rebuilding the state is preparing the constitution. On this topic, we have already established contacts with representatives of the new Syrian administration led by al-Julani," he said.
Erdogan said that Ankara intends to strengthen trade ties with Iraq and Syria, which will give new momentum to both Syria and Türkiye.
He said that lifting the embargo and restrictions imposed on Syria due to the Assad regime will help rebuild the country.
Türkiye also hopes to help Syria solve problems in the energy sector. Turkish Foreign Minister and National Intelligence Organization heads Hakan Fidan and Ibrahim Kalin will hold negotiations with Syrian authorities regarding these issues.
