Erdogan eyes completing work on new Constitution

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that he intends to complete the work on the new constitution of the republic and called on parties to take part in that work, Report informs with reference to TASS.

He was speaking in Ankara at a symposium dedicated to changing the basic law of the country.

“We will never stop working and fighting until we bring a new constitution to our country. Constitutions are not immutable texts. I encourage all political parties, civil society and academia to speak, discuss and negotiate to come up with the most ideal constitutional text possible,” he said.

Erdogan reminded that several years ago, when his party invited the opposition to work together on a new basic law, cooperation didn’t work out due to the unproductiveness of the opposition. The president repeated this call again at the symposium.

“Our country already has various constitutional experiences. Since May 27, 1960, our constitutions, unfortunately, were drafted and put into effect by leaders after coups d’etat. Our duty today is to write our own history and leave the greatest legacy for future generations on our 100th anniversary of the republic,” he said.
