The European Parliament has adopted a resolution on the violations of media freedom and safety of journalists in Georgia, Report informs.
The document, initiated by five political groups represented in parliament, was supported by 308 deputies, while 218 voted against it.
The resolution expressed concern over the deteriorating media situation in Georgia, threats against journalists, violence and harassment.
The authors called on the Georgian government to comply with all criteria, including the rule of law, an independent judiciary and freedom of the media, which are required for EU membership.
Georgia's ruling Georgian Dream party has sharply criticized the European Parliament for adopting the resolution. The party's chairman, Irakli Kobakhidze, said he hopes there will be a different European Parliament after Georgia, Ukraine, and Moldova join the European Union. He stressed that the resolution has no value for the Georgian government.
