Decision on future of Türkiye-EU relations postponed until spring

The decision on the future prospects for Türkiye’s European integration has been postponed until the next EU summit, which is planned for March next year, according to the Milliyet newspaper, Report informs referring to TASS.

Sources in Brussels reported that the leaders of the EU member states gave a positive assessment to the European Commission’s report on Türkiye, which was announced at the end of November by the head of the EU foreign policy service, Josep Borrell, and therefore an opinion was expressed to consider it at the organization’s summit on March 21-22. The document on the state of political, economic and trade relations between Türkiye and the EU, prepared in accordance with the EU’s instructions in June, is expected to be approved at the summit.

At the EU summit on December 14, it was decided to begin negotiations on accession to the European Union with Ukraine and Moldova, which could begin in March 2024. The summit also announced the granting of candidate status to Georgia and promised to return in March to consider the start of EU accession negotiations for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Negotiations between Türkiye and the EU on joining the community began in 2005. To date, 16 out of 35 points of the so-called negotiation dossier have not been resolved. One of the stumbling blocks in the negotiation process is the Cyprus problem.
