Armenia’s prosecutor general: Over 2,000 people under arrest over protests

Over 2,000 people are under arrest in Armenia, the country’s Prosecutor General Anna Vardapetyan said at a meeting of the commission on state and legal issues of the People’s Assembly, Report informs referring to Sputnik Armenia.

Answering a question from opposition MP Gegham Nazaryan about political arrests due to protests in connection with the start of the border delimitation process between Armenia and Azerbaijan, she called for the prosecutor’s office not to be involved in the political field.

Vardapetyan stated that she would speak in legal terms and could not make political assessments.

She assured that the prosecutor’s office carefully investigates and studies each case before sending it to court, and only in extreme cases does the supervisory authority insist on the arrest of one or another person involved.
