234 mosques returned to Muslims in Georgia

As many as 234 mosques confiscated during the USSR have been returned to Muslims in Georgia, said chairman of the State Agency for Religious Affairs of Georgia, Zaza Vashakmadze, the Georgian bureau of Report informs.

He was speaking at the opening ceremony of the international conference held on September 27 on the topic “The Role of the State in Interreligious Dialogue.”

According to Vashakmadze, although the vast majority of Georgia’s population is Orthodox Christian, there is a large Muslim community.

“The most important issue for integration is the study of the state language. Important work is also being done in this direction. The Georgian government is taking steps to further strengthen tolerance. I thank all religious communities for holding this conference,” said Zaza Vashakmadze.

Chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Structures of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mubariz Gurbanli, also takes part in the event.
