The formation of a group of mediators from middle powers, tentatively called M-10, could help resolve differences between major states, including the conflict in Ukraine and issues of strategic stability, according to experts from the World Economic Forum (WEF) in the program document “Shaping Cooperation in a Fragmenting World,” Report informs referring to TASS.
A group of ‘mediators from middle powers’ is needed to resolve conflicts such as between Russia and Ukraine, according to the report. Unlike existing unilateral peace initiatives, it would have the diplomatic weight, range of capabilities and geopolitical influence that would allow change the terms of negotiations on viable options for ending the conflict and achieving a sustainable peace. In addition, according to WEF analysts, the same group could ensure the resumption of arms control negotiations, using bilateral ties with major powers to shift the focus to issues of stability.
WEF analysts do not disclose the full possible composition of this group, but note that India and Norway could be among the mediators.
The need to establish such a group, which is proposed to be called M-10, is due to growing disagreements between major powers and poor communication between existing negotiating formats such as the Group of Seven, Group of Twenty and BRICS, experts say. The participants in the informal association should include countries with extensive diplomatic and economic influence, which are not considered the main players in geopolitical competition.
WEF is a Swiss non-governmental organization. It holds annual meetings with leading business leaders, political leaders and experts in various fields. The WEF members include about 1,000 large companies and organizations.
