Victoria Cross medals worth £600,000 disappear from UK museum

The disappearance of two prestigious Victoria Cross medals worth £600,000 from a city museum in the UK is being investigated by police, Report informs referring to The Times.

The 120-year-old medals, examples of Britain’s highest military bravery award, were discovered missing after a routine inspection at Chelmsford City Museum.

They were awarded to Sergeant William McWheeney in 1857 and Lieutenant Francis Parsons in 1900 for their bravery in the Crimean War and Boer War respectively.

Essex police confirmed they were investigating whether a theft had occurred, although the museum said there was no evidence of one.

The descendants of those awarded the medals have been contacted while the museum believes the medals may have been “located elsewhere.”

The Victoria Cross was established in 1856 and is the most prestigious decoration in the British honors system.
