US pledges $667 million to bolster global pandemic preparedness fund

The United States has announced a significant financial commitment to strengthen the global fight against pandemics.

According to Report, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen revealed that the US intends to contribute up to $667 million to the Pandemic Preparedness Fund, representing one-third of the fund's $2 billion target.

Speaking on the sidelines of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Yellen emphasized the importance of collective efforts in combating future health crises.

"Today, I am proud to announce that the United States intends to contribute up to $667 million to the Pandemic Preparedness Fund, or one-third of the stated $2 billion goal," she declared.

The US funding will support the fund's crucial activities in pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response until 2026. Yellen called upon existing donors to double their contributions and encouraged new partners to join the initiative to achieve the ambitious financing target.

She emphasized that governments, the private sector, philanthropic organizations, and civil society all have a role to play in advancing the Pandemic Preparedness Fund's mission, "so that we are better prepared for the next pandemic," Yellen stressed.
