The European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen may become the NATO Secretary General, Italian La Repubblica newspaper said, Report informs.
Although Ursula von der Leyen expects to be re-elected to her post, at the same time, she is also considering a plan “B”: to become NATO Secretary General.
The term of office of the current Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, expired last year, but it was decided to extend it. Formally, the reason was the beginning of the Russian war in Ukraine, but the main factor was that NATO member countries did not have a common opinion on the new candidate, the newspaper writes.
“US President Biden has long signaled that the time has come for the Alliance’s first female secretary general. Von der Leyen has the experience to fill the role, having previously been Germany’s defense minister,” the article says.
