Local elections, the first round of which is scheduled for April 7, could become the most expensive in the history of modern Poland, Report informs via TASS.
According to the National Electoral Office (NIB), the parliamentary elections on October 15, 2023, which cost the Polish taxpayer 300 million zlotys (about $75 million), are currently considered the most expensive since 1989.
According to the portal, the government allocated a significantly larger amount for these local elections - 875 million zlotys (about $218 million). This is explained by the fact that the NIB leadership believes that the elections, unlike parliamentary ones, will inevitably be held in two rounds - on April 7 and 21.
In addition, a decision has already been made to increase remuneration for members of election commissions. For counting votes in the first round, election commission chairmen will receive 900 zlotys ($225), their deputies will receive 800 zlotys ($200), and ordinary commission members will receive 700 zlotys ($175).
Local government elections are held in Poland every five years.
