UN: Unacceptable for Taliban to try to deprive women of right to work & education

Women in Afghanistan must return to education, no external or internal force can deprive them of that, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said while answering journalists’ questions about the situation in the region, according to Report’s local bureau.

The UN spokeswoman said that she discussed lifting restrictions on Afghan women and removing barriers to humanitarian aid to Afghanistan during meetings with the Taliban administration:

“It is unacceptable that the Taliban try to deprive women of the right to work and education, claiming that they are pursuing policies in accordance with Islamic laws. The prohibitions imposed by the Taliban are becoming more stringent every day. The situation in Afghanistan is very sad. The attitude towards women in the region ambiguous.

Such de facto government decrees seriously violate their fundamental rights as well as humanitarian principles.”
