UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Miroslav Jenca is in the region to clear up ongoing concerns in the buffer zone on the island of Cyprus, Secretary-General Stéphane Dujarric said at a regular briefing, the US bureau of Report informs.
He noted that the UN representative met with the leaders of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Southern Cyprus, as well as the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus: “UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Miroslav Jenca is visiting Cyprus. He held separate meetings with President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Ersin Tatar and the leader of Southern Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides. During the meetings, the UN official discussed the latest developments in the buffer zone, as well as ways to advance the Cyprus issue.
Jenca drew attention to the importance of reaching a compromise and called on the conflicting parties to reach a joint agreement with the UN. He also met with the UN peacekeeping forces in the region and thanked them for their difficult and responsible work,” Dujarric said.
He added that the assistant secretary general left for Ankara to continue discussing the problem, where he will meet with officials.
