Baku. 4 January. REPORT.AZ/ A man of Turkish descent has been elected mayor of Chatham Township, for the first time in the United States, according to the Turkish Consulate General in New York.
Report informs citing the Aksham that he was elected to the Municipal Committee of the Chatham Township in 2017. On January 3, the municipal elections were held among the committee members with Tayfun Selen garnering most of the votes.
Under the law, local residents elect 5 members of the Municipal Committee operating for 3 years. The mayor is elected from among members of the committee.
Notably, Selen is a member of the ruling US Republican Party. He is a resident of Chatham for 15 years. Selen graduated from the Architectural Faculty of the Istanbul Technical University.
