The transition period in Syria could last between three to five years, with the majority of power concentrated in the hands of the country's president, according to a draft constitutional declaration presented by Al Jazeera, Report informs via TASS.
Sources indicate that the draft outlines Syria as a presidential republic.
The declaration specifies that the country’s legislation will be rooted in the principles of Islamic law. Additionally, it states that the national army’s primary responsibility will be “to safeguard the homeland and Syrian citizens while maintaining civil peace.”
The possession of weapons will be restricted exclusively to representatives of state institutions.
As noted by the TV channel, the draft constitutional declaration draws from previous versions of Syria’s constitution, particularly the foundational principles of the 1950 Basic Law.
A day earlier, the constitutional committee established by Syria’s transitional government finalized the draft constitutional declaration. According to Al Jazeera, this document is set to be presented to the head of the new Syrian administration, Ahmed al-Sharaa, on March 12.
