Tens of thousands evacuated as massive wildfires rage in Washington

Around 60,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes due to massive wildfires in Spokane County, Washington state.

According to Report, citing the Associated Press, the fires have already destroyed at least 600 structures.

The agency reported that the wildfires burning around Spokane, the second-largest city in the state, spread over the weekend across an area of approximately 21 square kilometers.

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson said he had discussed the situation with US President Donald Trump and requested additional federal assistance in combating the disaster.

"The president has been briefed on the situation and expressed concern for the residents of the state. We will continue working together on providing federal assistance," Ferguson said.

Earlier, units of the National Guard were deployed to help fight the wildfires in Washington. The total area affected by fires across the state has reached approximately 1,000 square kilometers, while some fire zones, including those near Spokane, have yet to be contained.
