Sweden has extradited to Turkiye the first person convicted of membership in the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which Ankara considers a terrorist organization, Report informs via Turkish media.

Thus, Sweden took a concrete step towards implementing the memorandum signed with Turkiye on NATO membership, which provides for the extradition of persons involved in terrorist activities.

Mahmut Tat, who was sentenced to 6 years and ten months in Turkiye, applied for asylum in Sweden in 2015 but was denied. Some time ago, he was detained by the Swedish police. On Friday evening, Tat was taken to Istanbul, from where he was sent to a pre-trial detention center for procedures related to the execution of the sentence.

Sweden's extradition of a person convicted of terrorist activities to Turkiye took place two days after the talks in Bucharest on the sidelines of the meeting of the foreign ministers of NATO countries. According to their results, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that Ankara notes Sweden's more resolute attitude towards joining the alliance, but expects concrete steps to fulfill the memorandum on NATO membership.
