Stoltenberg warns of real risk for armed conflict in Europe

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg warned Friday of the "real risk for a new armed conflict in Europe" as both the alliance and Russia are increasing their troop presences around Ukraine, Report informs, citing foreign media.

The NATO Secretary-General said that "there is a risk of a comprehensive occupation, but there are risks of hybrid and information attacks by Russia, including attempts to overthrow the government in Kyiv, and many other aggressive actions."

"We have every reason to be seriously concerned, to be vigilant and ready to respond in the event of force against Ukraine," he said.

Stoltenberg said the Black Sea region, home to Ukraine and Georgia, the NATO allies, is a region of strategic importance to the alliance. According to him, an offer has been sent to Russia to discuss European security issues, but NATO will not compromise on the fundamental principles - the right of each country to choose its own path and the defence capabilities of the alliance.
