South Korea urges North Korea to abandon satellite launch plan

The government of the Republic of Korea has called on the DPRK to abandon plans to launch a reconnaissance satellite, threatening consequences as it would violate UN Security Council resolutions, Report informs referring to TASS.

“North Korea today announced a so-called plan to launch a satellite between May 31 and June 11. North Korea’s so-called satellite launch is a serious violation of UN Security Council resolutions that ban launches using ballistic missile technology, no excuse can justify this illegal activity,” the South Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman said in a statement.

“Our government strongly warns against committing declared provocations that threaten peace in the region, calls for the immediate abandonment of the illegal launch plan. If North Korea goes for a launch, it will pay the corresponding price and experience pain,” Seoul said. South Korea will “strongly respond to provocations” through close cooperation with the United States and Japan and engagement with the international community, the ministry added.
