Baku. 6 March. REPORT.AZ / Son of former Liberian President Ellen Sirleaf was formally charged with counterfeiting money, Report informs citing the CNN.

The amount of counterfeit money amounts to millions of dollars.

On Monday, Charles Sirleaf, who holds the post of Deputy head of the Central Bank of Liberia, was charged with sabotage of the economy, misuse of public funds and the promotion of crime. Besides him, Dorbor Hagba, Director of the Central Bank for banking issues, and Milton Wicks, former head of the Central Bank, will appear before the court. All three were placed in the detention center without the possibility of bail.

The subject of the investigation was the loss of money worth more than $100 million. This is about 4.75% of Liberia's GDP. The shortage was revealed by an audit of a private American company Kroll Associates Inc. In October last year, this news caused mass protests in the streets of Monrovia, the capital of the country.

Ellen Sirleaf has not yet commented on the charges against her son.
