Romanian PM considers resignation

In Romania, the leader of the Social Democratic Party and current Prime Minister, Marcel Ciolacu, is considering stepping down following a government failure in the presidential election.

According to media outlets, internal party discussions are ongoing, and a decision may be made as early as today during the coalition meeting.

Sources noted that Ciolacu may resign either today or in the coming days.

The cause of discontent was the fact that the coalition's candidate, Crin Antonescu, did not make it to the second round of the election.

Within the Social Democratic Party, pressure on the leadership is increasing: more and more voices are demanding the resignation of the party’s top officials and the convening of an extraordinary congress for a deep political overhaul.

The 2025 Romanian presidential election took place on the first Sunday of May, after the Constitutional Court annulled the results of the vote held in November 2024.

Initially, the court confirmed the outcome of the first round, but a few days later canceled its own decision. This occurred after declassified documents were released, indicating that Georgescu's campaign was the result of foreign interference.
