Reception of migrants arriving in Italy by sea, with the new terms of detention in temporary reception centers, will cost three times more than before. On September 18, the Italian Cabinet approved the possibility of extending the period of detention of migrants in the country to 18 months, according to the newspaper La Stampa, Report informs referring to TASS.
It is reported that maintaining one migrant for 18 months will cost the treasury up to 30,000 euros. At least 100 million euros are needed to create additional centers, which Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni promised, assuring that they would not pose a security threat if they were located in remote, sparsely populated areas. The corresponding instruction was given to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. There are 10 such operating centers in the country. In addition, it is necessary to increase the number of law enforcement officers to provide security for the new centers. Whereas the organized expulsion of an illegal immigrant costs more than 2,000 euros. As a result, migrants will need up to 60 million euros a year just for overnight accommodation and food, the newspaper calculated.
Italy sees the need to stop the arrival of migrants as its main task. One method is to organize a maritime mission that would counter the network of people smugglers. According to the newspaper Corriere della Sera, the mission blocking the departure will not be unanimously supported by the European Council, which will complicate its implementation. In addition, such a European mission would cause legal problems with third countries whose waters European ships would need to enter.
