Suicide terrorists in Iraq attempted to kill Pope Francis in a double assassination attempt in 2021, Report informs, citing Corriere della Sera, which quotes an excerpt from the Pope's autobiography, "Spera."
In the book, the pontiff writes that in 2021, before his trip to Iraq, he was urged to cancel his pastoral visit - especially to areas of the country that had long been under the control of the Islamic State. However, Francis did not cancel his visit.
The Pope's security was provided by local police and British intelligence. Two assassination attempts were made on Francis with a short interval between them - in Mosul, where the Pope arrived to meet with the Christian community.
