Poland intends to significantly strengthen the border with Belarus by the end of the first half of next year, Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Kamiński told RMF FM radio station, Report quotes Interfax.
“We want the fence to be installed by the end of the first half of 2022; it will be a structure 180 km long, 5.5 m high, the most modern solutions will be used there,” he said.
As Kamiński added, "along the Bug River, we will use a different type of security system".
According to the minister, now the border with Belarus is guarded by 13,000 servicemen, 4,500 border guards, and 2,000 police officers.
"We are constantly provoked, but our services are well prepared," Kamiński said.
Over recent months, Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia have recorded an increase in the flow of illegal immigrants trying to enter the EU through Belarus.
The European Union is accusing Belarus of creating chaos near the borders of the EU since it does not let back illegal migrants from the countries of the Middle East and Africa, who are trying to get into the European Union but are refused.
