More than 150,000 NHS workers in the UK may face layoffs as part of a sweeping healthcare reorganization, according to the NHS Confederation.
Report informs via The Guardian that the new CEO of NHS England, Jim Mackey, has instructed over 215 service branches to cut corporate spending by 50% by the end of 2025.
If all 215 units implement the plan, it could result in the loss of between 41,100 and 150,700 jobs, considering that the NHS currently employs around 1.37 million people, the article states.
Mackey has also called for the creation of a dedicated fund to manage the costs related to employee redundancies.
This comes shortly after UK Finance Minister Rachel Reeves announced plans to cut 10,000 civil service jobs amid ongoing economic challenges.
