Number of asylum applications exceeds 200,000 in Germany

The number of asylum applications in Germany increased by 77% in the first eight months of 2023 year-on-year, reaching 204,461, the German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, Report informs via Welt.

In August, 27,738 applications for asylum were submitted to Germany, which is 17% more than in the previous month. Thus, the 200,000 mark was surpassed after the eighth month of the year. By the end of August, 204,461 applications had been submitted, an increase of 77% year-on-year.

The applicants were mainly from Syria (61,500 - 81% more YoY), Afghanistan (35,800, an increase of 81%) and Türkiye (28,700 - an increase of 209%). In the history of Germany, the number of asylum seekers was higher than in the current year only at the height of the migration crisis in 2015/2016 and during the Yugoslav wars in 1992 and 1993.
