Netherlands to allocate €22B to compensate for consequences of gas production in 2 provinces

The Netherlands intends to allocate at least 22 billion euros to compensate for the consequences of gas production in the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe, Prime Minister Mark Rutte said today, presenting the government's official response to the parliamentary investigation, Report informs via TASS.

The final report on the results of the investigation was published two months ago. It notes that for years the government ignored the problems caused by gas production at the Groningen field, putting financial interests at the forefront and not considering the "terrible consequences" for the inhabitants of the region.

According to Rutte, quoted by the Netherlands Broadcasting Corporation, the Cabinet of Ministers fully agrees with the conclusions in the report. In total, to solve the problems caused by gas production, the authorities will allocate 22.2 billion euros. Of these, 8.7 billion euros will go to the implementation of existing plans and 13.5 billion euros will fund new projects.
