Half million euros spent on construction of tunnels for frogs in Hamburg

Blankenese, a suburb of Hamburg, is facing the problem of declining populations of frogs and pond salamanders, thus, frog numbers fell by more than a third during the year, Report informs, citing Gazeta.

In this context, local politicians from the Green Party decided to allocate almost half a million euros for the construction of four tunnels made of steel and concrete for frogs, writes Picture.

However, not all local taxpayers were happy with the decision, believing such spending was unfair. They also pointed out that the tunnels were built under quiet streets and bicycle paths, not under busy roads.

But developers hope the new tunnels will help preserve the Blankenese population of frogs and pond salamanders. Last year, local conservationists counted more than a thousand frogs, but a year later, their numbers had dropped to 616 individuals.
