Guterres: UN Security Council reform must begin with granting Africa a permanent seat

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has declared that the reform of the UN Security Council must commence by allocating a permanent member seat to Africa, according to Report.

The Security Council lacks a permanent member from Africa, Guterres said in an interview with TASS.

He noted that while changing this will undoubtedly be challenging, something that can achieve consensus must be taken as a start.

"Based on what I'm hearing from the five permanent members of the Security Council, I believe consensus is attainable. The first step should be granting at least one permanent Security Council seat to Africa," he said.

Guterres highlighted that the topic of Security Council reform has been taboo for an extended period.

It's evident that the Security Council should include more developing countries, which implies an expansion of the Council, he said.
