Groceries in Cape Town running out of essentials amid taxi strike

Bread and milk, as well as other food products, have disappeared from the shelves of many stores in South Africa's largest city, Cape Town, as a result of the eighth consecutive day of taxi strike accompanied by the blocking of numerous roads in the metropolis.

News 24 posted images of empty shelves in the bread and dairy departments, according to Report.

Key products are out of stock at several leading chain stores, including the hugely popular Woolworths. Authorities in Cape Town have announced that they are taking emergency action to resume delivery of goods to grocery stores. For this purpose, convoys of trucks are created, which are guarded by police units.

"The strike has made it difficult for essential goods, including food, to reach stores," Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said. He said the city authorities are ready to resume negotiations with the strike leaders after a four-day break.
