German vice-chancellor advocates promotion of military research

Vice Chancellor of Germany, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Robert Habeck spoke in favor of promoting military research in Germany and strengthening innovation in security and defense, Report informs via TASS.

"For a long time we in Germany, unfortunately, in the misguided hope that eternal peace would reign on the continent, did too little in the area of security. In fact, we also reduced the amount of innovation and research," Habeck said in an interview with the Handelsblatt newspaper.

He stressed that "things cannot continue this way."

"We need to achieve more in terms of security and defense capabilities. Improvement also means increased innovation," the minister stated.

Other countries, such as Israel, he said, are far ahead in this area. "The startup industry that thrives there also grew out of the military complex: drones, high technology, cybersecurity. As a result of working on this, many related products appeared," Habeck explained. Germany "ideally should have had defensive weapons such as high-tech interceptor drones years ago," he said.

He said the threat scenarios may become reality due to current events in Ukraine.
