German Interior Minister Nancy Feser, in an interview with Bild am Sonntag newspaper, opposed the introduction of stationary border controls within the European Union (EU) and expressed the hope that the number of refugees in Germany will soon decrease, Report informs.

"I want to protect the very heart of the European Union - open internal borders. Rebuilding the barriers would set us back decades," Feser said. "It would cause enormous damage to our economy, to the many passengers and families in the EU," the minister stressed.

At the same time, the head of the German Interior Ministry spoke in support of an agreement between the EU countries providing for a tougher attitude towards refugees who have no prospects of remaining in the EU. "This is a compromise that has never been reached before. We have overcome a deep split in Europe. We control external borders so that the borders within a united Europe can remain open," Feser stated.

She also hopes that the number of refugees in Germany will soon decrease. "In the future, this responsibility for accepting refugees will be shifted to other shoulders. This will also unload Germany," the minister said.
