Attempts to largely close the external borders of the EU to migrants are hopeless, said executive director of the EU border control agency Frontex, Hans Leijtens, Report informs referring to TASS.
He expressed disagreement with attempts to improve the protection of the EU’s external borders.
To be clear, nothing can stop people from crossing the border: not a wall, not a fence, not a sea, not a river, he said.
He noted that the only thing that can be done is to slow down the flow of people into the EU and better control it.
Leijtens emphasized that this talk about stopping the flow of people and closing borders cannot be discussed constantly, adding that his task is to find a balance between effective border management and respect for fundamental rights.
