Foreign Minister: Japan will continue sanctions against Russia

Japan will continue to put sanctions pressure on Russia over Ukraine, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa said, Report informs.

According to Yoko Kamikawa, the actions of the Russian Federation “undermine the foundations of the international order,” so “it is necessary to show that such actions, when the status quo in the region is changed by force, have their price.”

“Japan will continue to work closely with the international community and continue sanctions against the Russian Federation. As for the energy sector, based on the results of the meeting of G7 leaders, Japan will continue to seek independence from Russian energy resources, including oil and coal, and will continue to exert serious sanctions pressure on Russia,” emphasized the Japanese minister.

Washington introduced a ban on oil imports from Russia in March 2022. American companies purchased the last batch of Russian oil in April of that year. In addition, from December 2022, the G7, the EU and Australia introduced a price cap of $60 per barrel on Russian oil: more expensive oil is prohibited from being transported and insured. At the end of 2023, the G7 tightened control over compliance with the price cap and also introduced numerous sanctions against companies and individual tankers transporting Russian oil, allegedly in violation of the restrictions.
