First EU special envoy for Gulf region appointed

Luigi di Maio has been appointed as the first Special Envoy of the European Union to the Gulf region, Report informs referring to the statement of the EU Council.
The tasks of the new special representative will be to further develop the EU’s strong, comprehensive and strategic partnership with the countries of the region.
Luigi Di Maio will take up his duties on June 1 with an initial mandate of 21 months.
Di Maio served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy from 2019 to 2022.
